Lives are the attempts you have to beat levels. You can have a total of 4 (later you will get an option to increase maximum) and you lose one every time you fail to pass a level. It takes 25 minutes to refill one life. 

You can see how many lives you have and how much time you have left until one is refilled in the top left corner of the screen. You can also use crystals to refill lives.
